Does cleaning make carpet get dirty faster?

It can — if it's done with the wrong method. Here's the difference.

This myth comes from shampoo-based and low-rinse methods that leave detergent behind. Detergent residue is sticky, so it grabs soil and the carpet looks dirty again in weeks.

Hot-water extraction with a full rinse doesn't have that problem. The soap goes in as a pre-spray, does its work, and comes back out with the soil.

What to ask any cleaner

  • Do you rinse, or is it a shampoo/bonnet method?
  • Is a pre-spray and dwell time included, or is it just hot water?
  • How long until I can walk on it? (4–6 hours is normal, 24 hours is too wet)
