Wisconsin salt is quietly ruining your entry carpet

Road salt is alkaline and abrasive. Here's how to fight it between cleanings.

Salt tracked in from a Kenosha or Racine driveway does two things: it scratches the fiber like sand, and it leaves a white alkaline crust that attracts moisture and dulls the color.

Vacuuming alone doesn't remove it — the crystals bond to the fiber once they dry.

What helps between cleanings

  • A real walk-off mat outside and a second one inside each door
  • Shoes off at the door from December through March
  • Blot fresh salt tracks with a 50/50 white vinegar and warm water mix
  • Never use hot water on salt — it drives it deeper

The one appointment that matters

Book an entry-and-hallway cleaning in late March, once the salt is done for the year. It's a small job and it saves the most abused carpet in the house.
